Artist Residences at VIA
Made possible by the Knight Foundation, Artist Housing at the Village of Industry & Art reactivates the former Furness dormitories as a dynamic center for contemporary creative practice. Through the adaptive reuse of historic student housing, we envision the program establishing a vibrant ecosystem that supports artists at multiple stages of their careers—combining long-term affordability with short-term, intensive creative residencies in the heart of Philadelphia’s Avenue of the Arts.
Live/Work Artist Housing + Artist in Residency Program
The building’s 45 residential units are thoughtfully allocated to meet diverse artistic needs: 35 units provide long-term, affordable housing for artists to live, work, and build community, while 10 units function as dedicated residency studios, offering artists focused time, space, and connection to develop new work. Together, we envision these programs will foster collaboration, sustain creative practice, and contribute to the cultural vitality of Philadelphia.

Join the Community
Opportunities to engage with Artist Housing at the Village of Industry & Art will be announced in late 2026 or early 2027. This includes pathways for artists interested in long-term live/work housing, participants in the Artists in Residence program, and organizations seeking to host, support, or partner with resident artists.
In the meantime, we are entering a period of listening, planning, and research in collaboration with local artists, cultural organizations, and institutions that support Philadelphia’s creative community. As these conversations shape the program, we look forward to sharing more—building relationships, growing a diverse and dynamic network, and re-energizing the space as a home for working creatives.
