About the activation

This summer, the facade of the Village of Industry & Art comes alive with the sounds of Philadelphia. Launching July 1, Sounds of Philadelphia transforms 320 S. Broad Street into an open-air listening experience with monumental sculptural speakers broadcasting a daily playlist of music written, recorded, and inspired by the city. Running through September 22 from 11am–1pm each day, the free public installation invites neighbors, workers, visitors, and music lovers alike to gather on the Avenue of the Arts and experience Philadelphia’s rich musical legacy out in the open.

Created by Scout in partnership with the Philadelphia Music Alliance and fabricator Tim Gleeson, the installation celebrates the artists, organizers, and cultural workers who shape the city’s creative identity. From soul and jazz to hip-hop, punk, and indie, the curated soundtrack turns VIA’s historic facade into a speaker, a venue, and a daily invitation to pause and connect through music. As part of Scout’s ongoing activation of the Village of Industry & Art, “Sounds of Philadelphia” continues the vision of bringing artists and culture into the center of city life.

About the Philadelphia Music Alliance

Established in 1986, the Philadelphia Music Alliance is a community-based nonprofit dedicated to preserving and promoting Philadelphia's rich musical legacy — increasing awareness of the city's great musical tradition while supporting the current music scene. The Alliance is best known for the Walk of Fame, a series of over 150 bronze commemorative plaques along the Avenue of the Arts honoring Philadelphia musicians, music professionals, and radio DJs who have shaped the world of music. Through education programs, institutional partnerships, and ongoing community investment, the Philadelphia Music Alliance works to ensure that Philadelphia's contributions to American music continue for generations to come.

About the Village of Industry & Art

The Village of Industry & Art (VIA)  is a new creative destination on Philadelphia’s Avenue of the Arts—a dynamic, evolving ecosystem for artists, makers, and mission-driven organizations at the intersection of culture, craft, and civic life. Led by design and development firm  Scout, the project spans over 110,000 sqft and 1.9 acres, reactivating two iconic historic buildings —formerly Hamilton and Furness Halls of the now-defunct University of the Arts—through an adaptive reuse approach that prioritizes affordability, minimal intervention, and community-first design. Rather than wait for a grand opening moment, VIA is coming to life through early activations and collaborative occupancy, inviting a growing network of tenants to help shape its future from within.
