About Scout

Scout is a Philadelphia-based urban design and development practice focused on the adaptive reuse of distinctive buildings and the creation of places for creative communities. Over years of operating and redeveloping buildings, we have accumulated an unusual collection of furniture, equipment, vintage electronics, building components, design objects and assorted things that were simply too interesting or useful to throw away.

About Village of Industry & Art

Located along the Avenue of the Arts in Philadelphia's Center City, the Village of Industry & Art (VIA) is an active home for artists, makers, creative businesses, cultural organizations, and public programs. The Village of Industry & Art is designed to support production, collaboration, and exchange while providing meaningful permanent civic infrastructure to support working artists and cultural organizations.

The Role

We're looking for a highly organized, curious and entrepreneurial intern to help us catalogue the collection, understand what we have, determine what has value and find new homes for the things we no longer need.

The internship sits at the intersection of real estate operations, asset management, research, e-commerce and sales. The right person will enjoy turning our treasured chaos into an organized system—and will be just as comfortable researching a vintage Xerox Memorywriter as communicating with a buyer arranging pickup.

What You’ll Do

  • Visitors and tenants consistently experience VIA as warm, informed, organized, Create and maintain a comprehensive inventory of items available for sale, including photographs, descriptions, dimensions, condition and location.

  • Research individual objects and comparable sales to establish appropriate pricing.

  • Recommend the best sales channel for different items, including eBay, Facebook Marketplace and specialty marketplaces when appropriate.

  • Photograph and prepare objects for listing.

  • Write clear, accurate and compelling sales descriptions.

  • Publish and manage listings.

  • Respond promptly and professionally to prospective buyers.

  • Negotiate sales within agreed pricing parameters.

  • Coordinate payment, pickup and shipping where appropriate.

  • Maintain accurate records of listings, sales, fees and proceeds.

  • Identify items that should be retained, donated, recycled or discarded rather than sold.

  • At the end of the internship, leave Scout with an organized inventory and a simple repeatable process for future asset disposition.

We're particularly interested in students studying real estate, property management, business, entrepreneurship, marketing or operations, but we're more interested in how you think and work than your specific major.

The ideal candidate is exceptionally organized, writes and communicates well, enjoys research, is comfortable interacting with strangers and has enough curiosity to figure out what an unfamiliar object is rather than waiting to be told. Experience with eBay, Facebook Marketplace, resale, vintage objects, photography or inventory systems is helpful but not required.

Physical & Work Environment

This is an in-person role in Philadelphia with flexibility around a student's academic schedule. The internship will run for approximately three months.

Compensation

$15/hour plus a performance bonus equal to 10% of the sale price of items successfully sold during the internship, subject to the terms outlined at hiring.

To Apply

To apply, please send a resume and a short note telling us about something you've bought or sold secondhand—or an object you've researched simply because you wanted to know more about it to hiring@scout-ltd.com.
