Art School Kids celebrated the creative spaces where creativity flourished both as physical buildings and as meaningful communities of artists and makers. When Scout acquired the former University of the Arts buildings, Haviland and Furness Halls, they preserved an important space for art. And when they recovered unattributed slide collections documenting students at the university in the 1970s and 1980s, they recognized that these images captured the spirit they sought to keep alive.

Spaces evolved alongside the people who inhabited them. Buildings closed, collectives formed, and new venues emerged, but the spirit of creativity endured. By digitizing these found slides, the project honored not only the students and their work, but also the city’s ever-changing creative landscape.

The artistic temperament lived on even as its house was bought and sold and its contents scattered. The spirit of Art School Kids continued to have a home in Philadelphia — and in its people.

The exhibition was curated by Emily Girgis and Lily Goodspeed and was celebrated with a reception at PhotoLounge on Friday, November 7th, where guests gathered for drinks, music, and to celebrate Philadelphia’s passionate creative energy.
